I Want It Back

Let me start with the blogger's apology: sorry that I haven't posted here for awhile, life has been a bit crazy. The sad thing is that it's true. Also, the main point of this blog is my running, and over the past month there hasn't been much of that. I've been logging way too much time on the equipment in the gym and while I enjoy the elliptical, stationary bike and rowing machine, I really wish that I was out on the roads, cold weather or not.

For those of you who have been following along, my right knee is still bothering me. Not to the extent that it was at the beginning of January, but its still there. I have begun to get some running in, but it's been all treadmill, no time on the roads. While at The Running Company getting Anna her shoes for track season, I went ahead and got a new pair of shoes in case dead shoes are contributing to the problem. I liked the low profile and the lightweight of the Mizuno Wave Elixir 4s, but as a regular trainer they just didn't seem to hold up as would have liked, plus I wanted a pinch more cushion. This time I went with the Mizuno Wave Rider 13s.

My first 3 mile run in the shoes went well considering how low my base is right now. I'm hoping that I'm able to increase my base soon, but at this point I'm definitely out of a spring marathon, and the spring 1/2 marathons are starting to slip away. While that is discouraging, I just want my health back so I can get out on the roads and really enjoy some runs, maybe even some long ones.

Until that time comes, I'll just continue the cross-training and enjoy watching Anna and Will swim in the winter championship meets and look forward to Anna running track. Who knows, maybe she'll even let me join her for a run.

    Hang in there Joe. Do what you need to do to get back to being you. If that means no races in spring then for the long run it's worth it. We're in this for a lifetime.

I'm Hurtin'

I took the week off from running to rest my right leg. On Tuesday morning I woke to zero leg pain, so I jumped to the conclusion that I had been experiencing a muscle knot and it finally released. My knee still hurt a bit, but I figured that was because of altered walking and I would do the right thing and wait until Saturday to test it. I was a good runner and waited for Saturday. The kids were gone, so Jil and I spent Friday night out of town. I was ready to test the leg, I love to run with Jil, and I love to explore new places on the run; the stars were aligned. Happy Together

Every year brings certain milestones to us. We all experience birthdays, which of course marks our increasing age. We also experience anniversaries of many events. This past weekend was full of milestones for me. My wife and I shared our wedding anniversary and two days later, I marked another birthday. This year neither event was a milestone date, other than the passing of another year. The birthday was a normal workday with work and our regular busy schedules, but the anniversary was special, in what some may consider a little twisted. So how was the anniversary special? It began like just like any other fall Saturday with Jil and I splitting up. I headed off to a nearby community to support Anna at a cross country meet while Jil stayed home to make sure Will got to his playoff football game on time. Travelin

As I look back I noticed that I missed posting for the entire month of March. I think I can explain the reasons for that, but unfortunately, the frequency of posting also reflects the my running activity. Luckily it was not a perfect mirror image. I have achieved some sort of work/life balance, but not the preferred type as I have been overloaded on each end. March was championship swimming for club, spring break in Washington DC, and a business trip to Romania. Anyone of these things in itself would not have derailed my training, but putting all in the same month is a different story! Peles Castle, Romania March was going to be the month that I got everything back on track. Week 1 went by: no runs. Week 2 started off on the right foot with a pre-travel run with my wife. I packed all of my gear for my 2 week tip to Romania, because I was sure that I would have time.
