Finishing on the Right Note

The short course swimming season reached the end this weekend (finally!). We attended the Indiana State Age Group Swimming meet this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Each of the kids swam on each day, and both experienced mixed results.

On Saturday, we had a 200 medley relay in the morning and in the afternoon. We were able to manage our time so we (the parents) didn't spend the whole day sitting at the pool. Anna got a ride in the morning, so Will could sleep and come in time to see her swim. Anna got to go to lunch and shopping then back in time to see Will swim. Anna's (fly leg) relay swam right at their abilities and was able to move up 1 spot from their seed. Will's (breaststroke leg) relay team swam faster than their seed time, but was DQ'd for a bad turn on the backstroke leg.

Sunday brought more mixed results. Anna started with the 200 fly, but didn't come close to her seed time. She is usually very dependable, swimming very near to or better than her best times. To have a sub par performance in the top championship meet was a difficult experience for her. She followed up with the 1650 freestyle (mile). She held an even tempo the whole race, and swam a personal best by 7 seconds, placing 24th in the state. I think she is ready for a break, but is disappointed that she will be out of the water for a few weeks.

Will swam the 200 free relay. He was originally signed up to swim the 3rd leg, but was moved to the anchor spot on Sunday. The team was the 7th seed in their heat and 40th overall. The boys swam well, staying near the front of their heat for the first 2 legs, then pulled ahead slightly in the third. Will entered the pool and swam his best 50 time ever, relay split or race. The boys won their heat easily and placed 29th overall. Baseball starts on Monday.

It was nice for both Anna and Will to finish their seasons on a strong note. Even though the break is welcome, it leaves them ready to get back in the water and achieve more. Way to go guys!
